Kenneth Churchill
March 29, 1918 - October 20, 2010

Visitation is Sunday, 10/24, 4-6 pm, at Lindley Funeral Home
with funeral on Monday, 10/25, 10 a.m.

From his boyhood on the farm, working hard with his father during the Great Depression, building a multi-million dollar trucking company that spanned 26 states, 100 terminals, and employed hundreds of people, traveling with his wife, Jean, supporting and raising his large family and extended family, going to work at 6:30 every day and working late every evening, leading numerous national, state, regional, and local organizations and promoting highway safety all his life, Kenneth Churchill has led by example. And, on March 29, he turns 90 years young - still going to work every day, still leading by example, and still possessing the pioneer spirit and work ethic that make us proud to honor him. Happy Birthday, KFC! (Enjoy the brief slideshow below - see more photos on the bio page.)

Happy Birthday, KFC - I hope you have a great year. Thank you for all you taught me about being successful in business and for reinforcing what my own father taught me about good moral character, hard work, dependability, and getting the job done without complaint. My 15 years at Churchill - many of them spent as your assistant until I left you in Julie's care - taught me so much. We appreciate all you have done and continue to do! bk - (Brenda Fellhoelter, Owner, BK Web Works, Chillicothe, MO - 03/24/08)

Well, it goes without saying that I think you are the "greatest". I am the lucky one that sees you every day since I still come in to work with you and you know as we wind down our time at work that I will miss seeing you each and every day. Over the past 18 years you have been my champion when I needed one (which was pretty often) and you are one of the heroes in my life that has helped me become who I am. Wow...think about that I have spent every working day with you since I was 26 years old and we had some long days, didn't we! I will never be able to completely express to you how important you have been as my boss, my friend, my champion, my hero and as a part of my family. I love you and I am so glad you have been a big part of my life. I hope we get to spend another 10 years looking out for one another... besides you have some basketball games to go to when the boys get in high school! Love you-Julie - (Julie Bothwell, Secretary/Treasurer, Churchill Freight Systems, Inc., Chillicothe, MO - 03/24/08)

He speaks of them fondly. Thank you again and celebrate your 90th birthday like none other! We all love you! - (Crystal 'Ficken' Narr, Director, Main Street Chillicothe, Chillicothe, MO - 03/24/08)
Kenneth, I wish you the very best on your 90th!! I always enjoy our brief visits & have always had the utmost respect for you & all that you have done! I just hope that I am half as vibrant as you if I am fortunate to live so long! You certainly deserve some time away from the office so try to stay away a little more as a personal reward! Have a wonderful birthday! Looking forward to the century mark in just 10 short years! Mike - (Mike Palmer, Hometown Pharmacy, Chillicothe, MO - 03/24/08)
Ken, Happy Birthday and Congratulations! I'm the guy who bought your hangar. I'm also the guy who interviewed to be your pilot about 30 years ago, but I think we both agreed that my military and airline flying made it a little too challenging. And, we've seen each other from time to time at Hy-Vee's coffee shop and other places. I truly hope you have a great and wonderful birthday. Thanks for all you've done for the Chillicothe area! Larry Warren - (Larry Warren, Co-Owner, Sharp Focus Video, LLC, Chillicothe, MO - 03/24/08)

Best wishes not only for your birthday but for every day after.  Love you!  Dianna England - (Dianna England, Manager, FEC Services, Inc., Chillicothe, MO - 03/24/08)
Happy Birthday Kenneth. When I first moved to town in 1984 I can clearly remember meeting Kenneth for the first time. I was just a year or so out of college and working for Edward Jones at the time. Instead of treating me like "just another broker", Kenneth was kind enough to take time to visit with me and welcome me to the community. Kenneth has always been a gentleman, and has served our community and region well. Health and Happiness to you sir. Most sincerely, John Marcolla - (John Marcolla, Financial Advisor, Merrill Lynch, Chillicothe, MO - 03/24/08)

Ken, You have been a very significant person in my life starting with you being a Board member at the bank and helping me when I needed it. You were also a real key in making Highway 36 a reality and I enjoyed very much the trips you and I and Gordon Smith, CP Hutchinson, and Bob Staton took to various road openings and meetings. As President of the Chillicothe Educational Foundation, I also appreciate all you have meant to our Educational System. Most importantly, I am very pleased to be able to say I appreciate your friendship for all these years dating back when we were neighbors on Hoyt Drive and had Hoyt Drive parties. I think of you as much younger and you act much younger. Have a great 90th Ken - (Ed Douglas, Chairman Emeritus, Citizens Bancshares, Chillicothe, MO 03/24/08)

Norma - (Norma Hussey, Private Banking Coordinator, Citizens Bank & Trust Co., Chillicothe, MO - 03/25/08)
To the best Dad in the world. He lived by example daily and he always taught each of us kids to be fair and give an honest days work. He is the best and was always there for us when we had a problem. Fishing with my dad and relatives in Minnesota and Canada was always something that we looked forward to each year. Happy Birthday to Kenneth from your loving son, Fred. - (Fred Churchill, Vice President Sales, Duran Imports, Wentzeville, MO - 03/25/08)

May God continue to bless you and Jeannie in the coming years! - (Tom Crawford, President/CEO, Missouri Motor Carriers Association, Jefferson City, MO - 03/25/08)
Mr. Churchill, Happy Birthday. As you may know, my Father-In-Law is Darrell Rinehart who worked for you for many years. I can remember being at your company picnics while Jill and I dated. I spent a considerable amount of time talking to you and picking your mind. You may not know it, so I will tell you now, that I took much of your advice and it has helped me in business through the years. Thank you for all you have done for our community and for taking the time to talk to a youngster. - Brent Kline - (Brent Kline, President, Kline Corporation, Chillicothe, MO - 03/25/08)
Kenneth: Happy 90th birthday! You and Jean meant so much to Golda and Nick, and mean so much to our family. I had the pleasure of being in your employ as lawn boy; and must again apologize for knocking the cap off your water main and flooding the West end of Hoyt drive. Working as office "gopher" at Churchills, and therefore getting to know Gordon Ringberg and Paul Ficken in my early college years, had a profound and negative impact that I carry to this day. Seriously, Gordon, Paul, and the many others at Churchill Truck Lines were great people to work with. Many friendships that I value greatly began while working at Churchills those summers. Thanks again for all you have done for your friends and community. Tom Chapman - (Tom Chapman, friend, lawn boy, and office gopher, Chillicothe, MO - 03/25/08)
Uncle Kenneth, 90 years young---how can that be????? You look great and I only hope I have your energy if I make it that long. Let's hope I inherited those genes of yours instead of my immediate family. I wish you a wonderful celebration on your special day! See ya in May. Lots of Love, Sharon - (Sharon Thompson Greene, niece, Walnut Creek, CA 03/25/08)
Happy 90th birthday Mr. Churchill. You are truly one of a kind! Brenda - (Brenda Ruoff, Assistant Corporate Secretary, Citizens Bank & Trust Company, Chillicothe, MO - 03/25/08)
Kenneth, You have been such a great community leader and role model for my generation. I have admired your work ethic and community spirit for many years. It has inspired me to get involved in Chillicothe and give back to the area I grew up in and choose to live in as an adult. It is a great pleasure to wish you a Happy 90th Birthday! Julie Maupin McCoy - (Julie McCoy, McCoy Productions, Chillicothe, MO - 03/25/08)
Kenneth: Boss, I want to wish you a Happy 90th Birthday. Trying to recap 23+ years in words is not easy and all the memories are to numerous to mention. Those meetings when you would come into Fred, Cliff and my office, I will always consider a learning experience. Some of those learning experiences, at the time, were not what you would call really pleasant, but now I look back and it made me a better manager and person. The one thing you taught me was to always read the fine print, make sure the "i's" were dotted and the "t's" were crossed in all aspects of life. I also want to thank you for those times when it wasn't a Boss and Employee, but more like a Father and Son conversation and guidance. For Debbie, Spence, Crystal and myself, we wish you many more birthdays! Paul - (Paul Ficken, Chillicothe, MO - 03/25/08)
Grandpa, Happy Birthday. You are the best grandpa anyone could ever ask for. You are the hardest working man I know. Thanks for instilling those values in me. You truly lead by example and I am proud you are my grandpa. I have had a great time over the years fishing with you in Canada, with Hoppy, Diedrick, Palmer and Turner. I have never heard a group snore so much and so loud in my life. I learned to bring ear plugs on the following trips after I didn't get any sleep that week, ha ha ha. I look forward to the future knowing things I have learned from you in the past will help me. Thanks for always giving me advice on things when I asked or if I needed it. Happy 90th Birthday Grandpa, you're the best. - (Mark Churchill, Owner, Sport Clips, O'Fallon, MO - 03/25/08)
Kenneth: Nancy and I hope that you have a wonderful 90th birthday. We always enjoy visiting with you and appreciate all you have done for the community. May your 90th be the best. Jim and Nancy - (Jim and Nancy Valbracht, Chillicothe, MO - 03/25/08)
Years ago when your grandson, Mark, and my son, Jody, played together as little boys, I knew you were of a very special caliber not only as a Grandpa but as a principled, witty, warm-hearted person. My first impressions of you have only grown with admiration as I have observed your community leadership, your work ethic and your keen sense of doing the right thing. Your commitment to excellence has been your life gift to our community and to everyone who has worked with you in business and in volunteer endeavors. I count myself blessed to have been given that opportunity. Betty Preston - (Betty Preston, Sr. Vice President, Private Banking, Citizens Bank & Trust Wealth Management, Chillicothe, MO - 03/25/08)

Kenneth, Happy 90th Birthday. I am thankful to Churchill Trucks Lines for giving me my start in Transportation. I learned many valuable tools from Cliff, Fred & yourself that still help guide me on a daily basis in my work. I finally found another Trucking family here @ Modular Transportation after almost 20 years of searching. - (Jim Somsel, Operations Manager, Modular Transportation, Wyoming, MI - 03/29/08)

Kenneth, Congratulations on 90 great years. I have always admired your tenacity and "get it done" attitude. As a young boy going to the Townhouse to catch up on "the news" with my dad, I remember seeing you laugh and tell stories. People say when you crossed that street to the office, it was all business. I also enjoyed watching you and C.P. set off on your adventures each day to drink coffee and tour Chillicothe to keep up with the happenings. I don't know of any other pair that has driven so many miles within the city limits of Chillicothe. You are a man of class and I am glad to call you friend. - (Bill Hayen, Chillicothe, MO - 03/30/08)

How wonderful! E.L. has known you longer, but I've enjoyed knowing the family also. I remember visiting with your mother at the hospital years ago. We were both waiting to have a test. We visited and she told me about the beginning of Churchill's trucking. It's always good to see you at church also. - (E.L. & Pat Reed, Reed Seeds, Chillicothe, MO - 04/02/08)
